Matthias Spillmann Mats-up (ch) at Opus Jazz Club

Matthias Spillmann leads his band MATS-UP since 1999. The quintet plays his compositions and has released five albums until now. MATS-UP has been nominated for “Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”, the “BMW World Jazz Award”, won 1st price at “Moods Blues & Jazz Award” and 2nd price at “ZKB Jazzpreis”.

In its newest creation, Well-Tempered Rhythm & Natural Blues, MATS-UP combines archaic and contemporary material in a way that hasn’t been heard before. Starting point for the compositions is the natural scale, known from the world's oldest musical traditions like overtone singing or the alpine horn. In a long process where each musician “re-learned” his instrument almost from the start, the group created a new sound-reservoir for their improvisations. It’s no surprise that meanwhile they reached the deepest roots of jazz: rhythm and groove for expression of collective energy and the blues for the individual emotion....
